True Position Calculator

Calculate true position per ASME Y14.5. Enter nominal and actual coordinates to determine if a feature is within its tolerance zone.

Formula (ASME Y14.5):
True Position = 2 × sqrt((Actual X - Nominal X)² + (Actual Y - Nominal Y)²)

The result is compared against the diameter of the tolerance zone. If TP is less than or equal to the tolerance zone diameter, the feature passes. True position defines a cylindrical (or circular) tolerance zone centered on the nominal location.

What True Position Tells You

True position is the GD&T callout that controls where a feature is located relative to its nominal coordinates. Unlike basic +/- tolerancing that creates a square tolerance zone, true position defines a cylindrical zone — meaning the feature has the same allowable deviation in every direction. This is why a hole can be 0.005" off in X and 0.005" off in Y and still pass: the diagonal distance is what matters, not each axis independently.
