Why Material Weight Matters for Quoting

Weight is the foundation of every job quote. Raw material cost is sold by the pound, shipping rates are based on weight, and handling requirements change with part mass. If your weight estimate is off, your quote is off — and that means either lost money on underbids or lost jobs on overbids. Getting weight right on the first pass keeps your margins where they belong.

Practical Tips

• Add 10-15% for cutoff waste. Every saw cut consumes material. On small parts from bar stock, kerf loss and stub ends add up fast. Factor it into your quote before the price goes out.
• Know your standard lengths. Most bar stock ships in 12ft or 20ft lengths. Calculate how many parts nest per bar to figure true material cost per piece, including the drop.
• Near-net shapes save money on expensive alloys. On titanium or Inconel, starting from a forging or casting closer to final size can cut raw material cost by 30-50% compared to hogging from round bar.
• Density varies by alloy. Don't assume all steel weighs the same. Stainless is about 2% heavier than carbon steel, and aluminum alloys can differ by 4% between 6061 and 7075.
